On our third day in Naha we decided to rent a car and explore the rest of Okinawa-Honto. We were expecting lush vegetation and beautiful beaches beyond the borders of the city, but, in the usual Japanese fashion, the concrete sprawl seemed never-ending, and where the houses stopped, the American military bases began. I couldn't believe just how much space the bases took up! Eventually we did find some beaches, but every single one of them had been gobbled up by a resort, and many have been made entirely private. I snuck onto a resort beach to get this photo - it looks lovely, but if you could pan 90 degrees to the right you'd see a huge concrete apartment block.
