After a while we abandoned the main highways and fled into the islands of the west coast, where we found some stunning views. Unfortunately, just as we found this idyllic beach the heavens decided to let loose - the sea may be blue, and the beach may be white, but it was bloody freezing.

Where is this beach??? We are going to Miyako at end of May 2005 or early June.!
I am keen to get off the beaten track!
I can't remember the name of the island, but it's about halfway up the main island of Okinawa, on the west side, over a massive bridge. If you're staying on the main island you'll have to drive a long way north to find some decent non-touristy beaches...
However, if you're on Miyako, just rent a car and ask the locals - there are loads of brilliant, deserted beaches everywhere.
