On our last day in Naha we visited some Chinese gardens that were built to commemorate Okinawa's strong links with China. The Ryukyu Kingdom (now Okinawa prefecture) existed for hundreds of years as an entirely separate country from Japan, but paid an annual tribute to China for protection and trade rights.
