Here's a rather foggy photo of a tiny hotel onsen in Nagano. No-one else was in here, so I managed to nip in and take a sneaky photo. You can just about make out the taps on the right and the bath on the left. The little plastic chairs you sit on to wash are piled up at the back. This onsen is only designed for 2 or 3 people - usually they're a lot bigger.
